WordPress??

Again, it’s been a long time since my last post, bla bla bla… Time to analyze why I’ve not ben posting much recently.

Obviously, time is the number one factor. Classes, exams, organising a sexy black & white party, all that requires time, and come first in my list of priorities.

Another thing, which I think is related to the time issue, is the average length of my posts: too long! I also tried to implement some kind of dual-language capacity of the blog, but manually translating also requires a lot of time. It might be worth asking whether I should keep both french and english or only one of them. Also implementing this functionality messed up a couple of things in the website.

All these issues are more or less already being addressed. However, I
also feel it is the right time to consider a different vision for my
personal blog. When the website was developped, it was meant to be some
kind of small community website, with a developed member page and
interesting member facilities. Also included a plugin for photos
(Expose4) and other tweaked features which meant that when I felt the
will for blogging, I thought this could be a good start, and by
changing 2 or 3 things I could easily transform it in a blog. This site
is using Joomla, a powerful CMS, in its 1.0.x version. Very adapted to
develop your own website pretty easily, without prior knowledge. With
time, it led me to believe this is no really adequate for blogging. The
template is too narrow, community is big but has started to migrate
towards the 1.5 version, something I am not wanting to do.

Enter WordPress, leader of the blogging php
scripts/CMS. Huge community, basic functions, but does what it is meant
to be. I already have what is required to run it on my webserver so
basically no technical requirements. I want to go back to blogging, and
to blogging only. It’s a post on Mr. Dream’s blog which made me start to realize many things were OTT.

The radio plugin is useless, in fact I used it so when I don’t have my
music with me I can easily listen to something that I like. But
actually I just need to go on lastFM to do the same thing, right? The
last members module is also useless, and so are the "fast
navigation",Games, Tops, the detailed member page. In fact, except for
admin purposes, there’s no need for any sort of login. Maybe close
family or friends to give them access to my naked pictures .

Main problem with this migration would be the transfer
of the contents, to find another solution for pictures and maybe
videos. For pictures, there’s Picasa which allow 1GB of pics, I need to
forget about FlickR, limitations are just crazy. Or I could have a php
script or another flash gallery and put the pics directly on my server
(I have 50GB, that should do it ). For transfer of contents, I’ve
seen so "wizard" to migrate from joomla to wordpress… I don’t know
what it is worth, maybe I should give it a try…

Anyway, I think pretty soon, things are going to change here!
